How often have you looked at someone and instantly thought, “oh, that must be easy for him” or “you must have been fit your whole life and never had to work for anything.” Most of the time it is coming from someone who is either jealous or has a lack of work ethic. Even the greatest of the greats had to put in countless hours of practice to develop their craft. You could say that Michael Jordan was born to play basketball, I would agree with you 100% on that. But, it wasn’t given to him. Jordan was cut from his high school team! Thats right, before he went on to play for UNC, win 6 NBA Championships, 14 time NBA All Star and become a first ballot HOF, Michael Jordan was told he wasn’t good enough.
This can be relative to everyday people like you and me as well. For instance I wasn’t always the “fit” guy I am today. Growing up I suffered greatly with self image and being well overweight for my age group. I used to wear t shirts 2 times too big just so no one would see my body figure. I was never confident in myself, never wanted to go swimming or take my shirt off in front of people. As I grew up and my body began to change I slowly started to lengthen out and lose some weight. I also stopped taking some migraine medication, something I suffered from growing up that made me eat all the time. Not exactly what I needed at the time but it helped with my headaches. As I got older and into more competitive sports I found the weight room and fell in love with it. Being able to have control over your own body and how you look is something I loved. Now not to say that you can’t love the body you’re in or that I didn’t is wrong because you 100% can. But, for me, I wanted to make a change in how I looked and it carried over a huge amount of self confidence I never thought or imagined I’d have.
Fast forward to now, I am currently in prep for a physique competition and am in the best looking shape of my life. How did I get here? Countless hours and hours of time in the gym, mindful and monitored eating and dedication. Most of it never being seen by the outside eye. I didn’t just wake up and have all of this handed to me. If I can make a life change so can you. Just because you’re at one point in your life now does not mean that one day you cannot be somewhere else. Take each day for what it is. Formulate a plan and take action. Not everyday is going to be easy, you will have days in which you want to give up, give in and resort to self pity. Don’t give in. You must remind yourself why you chose to change and imagine that end goal, whatever it may be.
