Senior trip was two weeks away, and most of my classmates were breaking out their suitcases and looking forward to heading to Florida. When I started to think of what to pack, one day on the schedule made me instantly nervous; the planned day at a waterpark. While my friends were probably looking forward to spending the day in the sun, I found myself looking in the mirror and feeling my heart sink. It was at this moment that I truly realized how far I had let myself go during my high school years. I had given up sports and being active in middle school and spent the next few years exercising my thumbs on an XBOX controller and shoving my face full of whatever I could get my hands on. I stood there looking in the mirror and saw a 242 pound guy who had given up on himself. I had told myself countless times before that I needed to get in shape but those diets and workouts never seemed to last more than a week or two and I always ended up back on the couch in front of a TV. But this time was different. There was no escaping the waterpark on senior trip. It was a done deal that in just a few days I was going to be shirtless in front of my entire senior class. I had no choice but to get my butt in gear and make a change once and for all.
The very next day I sent a text to the local gym owner and got set up with a membership and my journey had begun. I spent nearly every free minute I had in those two weeks in that gym busting my butt with hopes that maybe I could look a little better before my trip. Although I may not have looked that much different on that day at the waterpark, what was different was my confidence. Because, for once, I had stuck with it and decided to make a change in my life.
Moral of the story: it took an embarrassing wake up call for me to actually make a change. I know I am not the only one who has found themselves in a rut like this. You can tell yourself over and over that you need to lose some pounds, or that you need to get back to your training cycle, but sometimes saying that just isn’t enough. You may need to get a date on the calendar that gives you no choice but to make your next move. My date was going shirtless in front of my senior class;what’s yours?
